Understanding Elephant Behavior: Safe Encounters
Elephants are undoubtedly the most awe-inspiring animals in Kruger National Park. They are intelligent, highly social, and immensely powerful. While usually peaceful, they can be incredibly dangerous if they feel threatened, particularly breeding herds with small calves or bulls in "musth."
Recognizing Body Language
Elephants communicate constantly through complex body language. Understanding these signs is crucial for your safety.
Relaxed Behavior:
- Slow, deliberate movements.
- Eating calmly, browsing on trees.
- Flapping ears lazily (this is primarily to cool down).
Agitated or Defensive Behavior:
- Ears fanned out wide: Used to make themselves look larger and more intimidating.
- Head shaking: Often accompanied by snapping of branches.
- Swinging a front foot or kicking up dust.
- Trumpeting or low, rumbling growls.
- Mock charges: The elephant runs toward you but stops short, often trumpeting.

The "Musth" Bull
Bulls enter a state called "musth," characterized by a massive surge in testosterone. They become highly aggressive and unpredictable. Signs of Musth:
- A dark, strong-smelling secretion weeping from the temporal gland (between the eye and ear).
- Constant dribbling of urine.
- A distinctive, heavy swagger when walking. If you see a bull in musth, give him an extremely wide berth. Do not block his path.
Driving Etiquette Around Elephants
- Always leave an escape route: Never drive into a situation where you are boxed in by elephants or other cars. Always ensure you can reverse quickly if necessary.
- Do not rev your engine: This is seen as a direct challenge. If an elephant approaches, turn off your engine and sit perfectly still.
- Yield the right of way: When crossing paths, the elephant always has the right of way. Stop well in advance and let them cross.
- Be patient with roadblocks: Elephants often use the tar roads to travel or simply to rest on the warm surface. Be prepared to wait. Honking your horn is incredibly dangerous and illegal.
